While filming a branded content piece for the Home Depot Foundation, I grabbed this shot of our main subject Malcolm Harvey as we approached a street corner from his childhood. Malcolm’s road to redemption took him through gangs, drugs, the military, and decades of homelessness on the streets of Los Angeles. As a teenager he was shot while leaving the corner store with a friend. This photo captures the first time Malcolm returns to that site in over three decades.

Joaquin just graduated high school and is looking forward to leaving Los Angeles and starting college in Austin… almost as much as he’s looking forward to starting a band.

Professional bantamweight boxer and former WBC Champion Tony Lopez has lived in North Texas since he was just shy of 2-years-old. His parents came here from Querétaro, Mexico in search for a better life for their family. He’s been boxing since the age of six and eventually qualified for the 2012 Olympic trials only to be removed from the roster due to his citizenship status. Now one of ~800k Dreamers in the DACA program, Tony gets into the ring anytime an opponent is brave enough to meet him.

I passed Will Jacobs walking down the road, ranch coat blowing in the wind behind him like some weathered cowboy enduring a flat tire or lame horse. I immediately looped around, pulled over, and asked if I could photograph him. He obliged and proceeded to tell me about his musical history - “The best piano player, next to Jerry Lee Lewis.” His home was a storybook of memories, muses, and musical legends that had weathered “Old Jake” into the man in front of me.

Some deployments with Team Rubicon in its early years went on for weeks for some volunteers. The military camaraderie of old would often present itself in less conspicuous ways. In this case, a hair trimmer gives a Navy veteran a youthful look to help combat the hot Arkansas days during a tornado response.

Charlie Mixon prepares the windows of the St. Boniface Catholic Church for their renovated stain glass to be reinstalled. Charlie’s grandfather helped build the church, and Charlie, along with other community members has been renovating the remote hillside house of worship.

Team Rubicon’s tornado response in Moore, OK made an incredible impact on not only the community but the volunteers. At the end of long June days, when temperature typically hovered over 100 degrees, a cold beer, some camaraderie, and a blast from the waterguns was pure heaven.

Tarrant Area Food Bank setup a drive-up food distribution at an East Fort Worth elementary school. As the cars and food passed quickly, a family who walked up from their nearby home stood patiently. I directed them to volunteers, and they walked away with a box of food. The boy was so incredibly humble and appreciative. His face and spirit were angelic and stay with me. Some of the photos from this series were featured in Fort Worth Magazine.

Moto taxis are the most economical and quickest way for families to get from place to place. It was not uncommon to see a mother and up to three children climb aboard, grocery bags and all.

Upon returning to my car in the Trader Joe’s parking lot, I heard two girls singing along together and laughing through their car’s closed windows. It was a moment of pure joyful youth. And with good reason as the were only a couple months away from graduating high school.
